June 5th, 2002 – Australian Prime Minister tells parliament of refusal to ratify Kyoto

Despite extorting (sorry, ‘negotiating’) an increase in emissions at the December 1997 Kyoto meeting of the UNFCCC, Australia still managed to embarrass itself further.  Using World Environment Day as a platform,  Prime Minister John Howard stated

‘It is not in Australia’s interests to ratify. The protocol would cost us jobs and damage our industry.’

The battles over “jobs” had been fought hard and dirty, using computer ‘modeling’ to show that the sky would fall if so much as one lump of coal wasn’t immediately dug up, and then either burnt locally or sent for export…
