March 20, 1987 – “Our Common Future” published

This is the report, initiated in 1983, that brought the term “sustainable development” into popular discourse.  It’s also known as the Brundtland Report, after its initiator/sponsor, Gro Harlem Brundtland, Norway’s first female Prime Minister.

The United Nations General Assembly then wanted an environmental treaty and pencilled it in for 1992.  A year later climate change burst onto the scene and the 1992 date became a mercifully unmoveable deadline for negotiations, which otherwise might have carried on for a decade (e.g. International Law of the Sea)…
